CHAPTER 40

The next morning, the nursery had arrived bright and early. The shrubs were delivered first, and the trees were due in about an hour. My crane was due any minute. I had received from the nursery the depths of the boxed trees. I had all five holes marked. Juan and Diego and their crews were busy digging the plant pits when the shrubs arrived. I took two crew members and had them unload the truck with the nursery truck driver. Once everything was offloaded, I started spotting the plants where the trees would not be planted.

Marie came to the courtyard, watched me spot the shrubs, and shot some pictures with her camera. I asked her if I could take a couple of photos. She handed me her camera and showed me how it worked; we were all ready.

“Marie, do me one favor. Pose for me by the plants for a before shot.”

She was a little hesitant but then decided to play along. I wanted her to look as if she were entering the garden. I told her that if she liked a certain plant, she should pose by the one she liked the best. She followed my lead; she picked a beautiful yellow rose, not without getting stuck by the thorns. I showed her how to handle the rose. “Smell the flower.” She bent over slightly and sniffed.

“The rose smells good.”

I showed her how to handle the flower, cupping the rose in her palm, her thumb on the petals. “Now bend and sniff. Take your time, slowly, and I will tell you when to stop and give a nice smile.” She bent over slowly, cupped the rose in her hand, put on a beautiful smile, and sniffed the rose. Click, click, click! “That was so nicely done.”

“Did I do it right?”

“Come here and take a look.”

“Wow, you took a nice photo. It will look great in my album.”

“I have a great subject to work with. You made the photo much better than the one pushing the button.”

“Would you like to take another photo?” she asked.

“I’d love to. You pick your second favorite flower.” She found a lavender flower, Pelargonium peltatum, or ivy geranium. She followed the same procedure as with the rose. Click, click, click!

“How did I do?”

“Come here and take a look.”

“Not bad. You take good photos. Can I do another one?”

“Of course.” She saw the sweet broom, a canary-yellow flower. She bent over and followed the same procedure as prior. Click, click, click!

“I’m getting pretty good at this, aren’t I?”

“Marie, you are doing everything perfectly.”

“One more shot, please. One more flower, and then I will let you get back to work. I like smelling the rose. Do you have another flower that smells like the yellow one?”

“I have a fragrant pink flower out front. I’ll bring it into the courtyard.” I went and got the pink rose, brought it into the courtyard, and put it on the circular planter wall cap. Marie got on her knees on the wall cap and bent over to smell the pink rose.
